This is a jig/carriage for traversing the blade past a standard bench grinder. White offered a bench grinder but this jig could be used with other manufacturers models as well.
From the John A White Company catalogue, “we present herewith a cut of our new improved hand knife grinding machine for planer knives up to 27 inches long. It may be used with an emery stand, as shown in the cut, or with an ordinary grindstone. The bearings for the carriage are covered by the frame of the machine, thereby keeping off dust, grit, etc allowing the carriage a free and easy movement and reducing wear to the minimum. The carriage has a bearing on a steel rod, and is supported at the back on an anti friction roller running on a planed way parallel with the rod. With this arrangement there is very little friction, and the work is done with little effort on the part of the operator. The carriage is adjusted by a thumb screw to get the desired bevel, and the knife is ground slightly concaved. The cutters are bolted to the face of the carriage and rest at the bottom on set screws admitting of adjustment. A “T” slot is cut the entire length of the carriage for the bolt heads so any style of cutter may be fastened on. The accuracy with which this grinder works, its ease and convenience in operation, and its low cost, make it a very popular tool.”
