This machine showed up on the online classified ads on Wednesday afternoon. I was the first caller. I said I was ok with the lathe, ok with the price, but I had a small problem with it being located 7 hours away. I agreed to send him a $50 deposit this weekend and try to get down there by the end of the month. Shortly after making that deal I realized that it would cost me at leat a full day of travel and over $100 in gas alone, making it much less of a bargain. It all became a moot worry when he called this morning to say he had changed his mind and would be heading my way prior to the end of the month, today in fact and he was going to load it up that morning and would drop it off at my house this afternoon. Sure enough, after I got off work, he was here at about 4:45. He helped unload it out of his car, told me everything he knew about the lathe, we paid him and he drove off. This is my first lathe and I am thrilled to have it. It also came with a nice set of carving tools. Total cost of lathe, stand, motor, and tools, $150. Restored faith in the kindness of strangers, priceless. Friday, March 4, 2011.
