I had placed a wanted ad on craigslist for old solid core doors. This fellow answered this ad and had this machine sitting in front of his barn . A couple of weeks later we made a deal and I took the machine home and tore it down and rebuilt it.This machine was in a carpenter shop at a pretty big coal-fired generator plant. They used this machine to cut cribbing, beams etc. for maintenance of this plant.
Special thanks to my neighbor Jay and his crew, as they sanded and sanded and mudded and sanded more to get the main body pretty smooth and then painted everything for this machine.
Looks to me like all of the guarding , for both wheels , motor and drive sheaves were added by the owner not manufacturer.
What is amazing is all of the parts were complete on this machine.
I had to have the upper and lower guides rebuilt, had the 3hp single phase repulsion/induction motor rebuilt, installed and crowned tires for both wheels and re-assembled entire machine.
I used aluminum expanded metal for the upper and lower wheel guards instead of the heavy steel wire that was on there.
I believe the age of this machine is right about the time they switched from babbitt bearings to ball bearings , as both upper and lower wheels are ball bearings yet the table trunnion ,guide post and upper tension screw bearings are Babbitt. This machine also had a sticker by the badges that said something to the effect of this---"SKF the Innovative New Lifetime Ball Bearings" The sticker was old and faded---but it would be cool to find one similar.
I am guesstimating the age between 1920-1930 ??? Maybe someone would have more info on that??There is also a badge on this machine that reads "Tidewater Supply Company Norfolk Virginia"---I am assuming they were the distributor or???
Thanks
