I was fortunate to find this lathe listed for sale locally on Craig's List and bought it to take the place of my Harbor Freight lathe. The level of quality of the SB lathe is far superior to the HF lathe and a real pleasure to work with. After spending 26+ years working as a machinist and toolmaker, and many of these years working with older machine tools, I've really come to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into these machines. Although I would rather have a SB Model A, this lathe is fantastic to work with and is a primary machine tool in my vintage tool shop. I had some issues with keeping the 1" flat belt on the drive pulleys, so I made a new motor pulley on this lathe before replacing the one that came on the motor. I cut a blank from 2-1/2" diameter steel bar stock and made the pulley with a 4 degree crown in the center and no shoulders. The crown centers the belt very well, so no more problem keeping the belt on the pulleys.

Shown is the collection of items purchase with the lathe in the PO's garage. The chuck wrench in the chuck is for the picture only, but still a wicked practice.

Change gear cover. This lathe was owned by W.A. Voell Machinery in Milwaukee, WI prior to the PO from whom I bought it.
