Comments:
Great example of a foot powered lathe! Speed or hand lathes could be used for both wood or metal turning. With the compound, at least some metal turning could be done. No lead screw but threads could be "chased." Such a lathe would be cheaper than one with a lead screw.

The wood tool rest (shown on bed) replaced the metal one for wood turning. Young lathes had some very decorative castings especially in the legs. This one has a dealer brass tag "Frasse & Company, 95 Fulton Street, NY". Not sure of paint color?

Other manufactureres such as Seneca Falls also made this type of combination wood/metal lathe. The Barnes #4 had more capabilty with a "manual" lead screw driving or moving the carriage.

Love to hear from others interested in foot powered machinery. For additional information on foot powered machinery, please visit my webiste at www.footpoweredmachinery.com
