I discovered this machine on an online advertising site in summer 2009 and contacted the seller to arrange a viewing. A hour long drive had the machine in front of me. It had been stored outside under plastic for a couple of weeks in February… not a good start. Electrics were 440 volt three phase… strike two. The jet-lock fence was there but the rails were missing…. Strike three. Not being in a hurry I headed home to continue my search for another machine. A few days later the seller contacted me to see if I was still interested… I guess I still was. I intended to replace the stock fence anyway so one problem solved; the surface rust a quick fix, another problem solved… just the electrics to work out.
The seller explained that the Unisaw was part of a package deal from a school auction and it was the only piece that he was unable to resell, probably because it was three phase. Because the Unisaw motor is designed specifically for this machine a replacement is very expensive. I solved this problem by designing a bracket to adapt the Unisaw mounting system to accommodate a regular electric motor. Once completed I installed a TEFC 220 volt single phase 2.5 hp motor, unlike the stock motor that was 3450 rpm the new one is 1725 rpm. The speed change dictated a change in pulley size from 3 ¼ to a 6 ½ to maintain the required arbour speed. Once again no new paint, just the mechanical and electrical upgrades to put it into "like new" working order.
The installation of an older style Unifence completed the rework of this machine that has become one of the latest additions of great old machines in my shop.
