I paid $230 for this lathe at a local estate auction on the western edge of Rockford, Illinois. The sale took place on a Summer's Thursday morning in 1994. The PO accumulated a dozen metal/wood lathes in his lifetime. This lathe reportedly came from the Rockford School District. The lathe sat in my storage because it ran ruff (bad vibrations) under load. Two years ago I started reading OWWM threads on Walker-Turner's L1152 Lathe.
I found it was typical for this variable speed lathe to come from a school. Many machines look great because they experienced maintenance problem(s) and were sold as surplus to buyers who could not get them to operate properly. The three common problems are: lubrication, headstock belt placement, and motor belt tension/alignment (ref. 4/16/2006, Publication Reprint, Instruction Guides, "Brochure and Instruction Sheet No. L52" submitted by John Orvis.
Lubrication failures like bronze sleeve bushing in the variable speed pulley or headstock bearings are major failures buyers should avoid. When I went to replace the 50 year old belts I found the source of the vibrations.... the headstock belt was over the wrong pulley step causing incorrect tension!
*Serial # 14 947 represents a post WWII and pre 1951 manufacturing era. Many 12" Variable Speed Lathes with Model No. L1152 have this same 14 947 "Serial No." stamped on the tag.
