Photographed is a well constructed wood frame shaper found in a central Connecticut estate. The two rear legs are missing but the loose frame members which mortise into them are present. It’s my guess that the previous owner intended to repair or replace the rear legs due to some end rot and they somehow got lost along the way. I have some old surface 3 ½ x 10 birch beams from an old lathe which when squared will make perfect replacements.

5/8 spindle, 30.5” wide x 45” long x 38” high, frame. The spindle yokes are substantially cast and planed true on all side. The vertical spindle adjustment is smooth and precise.

Wood frame shapers are relatively uncommon and of the few I’ve come across this is the heaviest and best built.I’m guessing 1880’s for a date but it’s tough to tell with these wood frame machines. It could be older or newer.
