Okay, now, since Richard Lammer bought and restored the same Wood-King jointer that I originally posted pictures for, I have modified my Wood-King jointer entry with pictures of a jointer being sold by the Los Angeles Unified School District through an internet auctioneer (no, not Ebay). This unit appears almost identical to the one listed by Richard Lammer except that 1) the guard is present, 2) the "Patent Pend." lettering appears to be missing from the front casting, and 3) it is a direct-drive unit.

A while back, I had hoped to find evidence that the Wood-King jointer included an implementation of a patent granted to Ludwig Spady of Portland, Oregon. Unfortunately, I cannot say for certain that these pictures either prove or disprove my theory since the drawing in patent number 944976 (http://www.datamp.org/displayPatent.php?number=944976&type=UT) show the end of the novel guard as circular, and the guard on this unit is clearly shaped more like a stretched out pork chop. Of course, the exact shape of the guard as drawn on the patent would not be critical to the claims made in the patent, so if I had to guess one way or the other, I'd say this guard is Ludwig's baby.
