Besides the grimy gray paint job, this planer has survived 100 or so years in good condition. I did quick job of cleaning and lubricating, set it up with a 7.5Hp motor on the head and a 2Hp motor on the feed and put it to work in my shop. After some initial issues with tearout I installed a VFD on the feed motor in order to get the feed rate down. Now I can adjust the feed rate depending on the material. I've had good results with figured material, running as slow as 10FPM. After putting some time into setting it up, I've found that an old squarehead machine like this can be a very practical tool.
