This machine was acquired from a farmer who had received it from his son with the intention of putting into use but never got around to it. I had inquired about an old lathe he had posted, which was already spoken for, but we continued to talk about why I would like an old machine like that and he asks if I would be interested in a 30” band saw. I could hardly keep from shouting out a YES. He told me the name, Hall & Brown, and that it had come from a wood shop in the Seattle area. This site allowed me to find some information on the company and what it might look like. Me and a buddy took a road trip out to see what be in that barn of his and this is the beauty I found.

The conscious is that the paint job and pin stripping is original. It is a model #1 and believed to be made pre 1900 but an exact manufactured date is hard to pin point. The use or reasoning behind the #296 painted on the casting arm is up for debate but seems to follow other Hall & Brown machines with their original paint still intact. The wood top would seem to be an original as well but has had split over the years and been tagged at each joint with a corrugated fastener. The guides seem to be in good working order.

It will get a few touches done on the parts that have lost all the paint but I will tread lightly to preserve the history this machine shows. It needs the Babbitt re-poured and the top glued and refinished. The lower arbor was broken and no motor came with the saw. The farmer asked that I give him a call when it is running as he would really like to see it under power. I can’t wait to make that call.
