`Twas fate.
Out garage saling in the Summer of 2001, the guy had a few tools on the table, asked him if he had anything else - sure enough, he had been a pretty serious hobbyist woodworker for 30 years, and was now moving to Florida, and was selling everything since his new house had no where to put it, and he was pretty much giving it up. He took me inside to the shop, where he had all kinds of machines - the planer was the only one I was interested in.
It's a pretty solid machine, mostly cast iron construction. It's got a nice Faraday-Leeson Farm Duty 240 V, single phase, 2 hp motor - I think that's most of the weight of the whole machine - the whole thing is quite beefy for its size. And even better, it came with the mobile base, original owner's manual and knife-setting jig.
Sold it in 2006 because I had never gotten around to cleaning it up and restoring it, let alone using it - just moved it from house to house for about 5-6 years - and I acquired a very nice plug-n-play Delta 15" planer for about 1/2 of what it would cost new.
