The guy I bought this lathe from said he got it from "an old-timer in Wilton, NH" back in the early 80s. He didn't know any history beyond that. In a discussion on the .org site it was suggested that the lathe was probably made in Massachusetts, most likely Worcester. Similar looking lathes on this site include some made by F.E.Reed, P.Blaisdell, and Lathe & Morse.

Update: Maker changed to F.S.Perkins based on a very similar looking lathe with a badge by that maker. (See http://www.vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=17768 )
