I bought the lathe (without wood base or motor) for $10 dollars at a woodworkers swap shop. I replaced the bronze bearings with new ones (drilled and etched in new oil galleys) and sand blasted the mild rust from the exposed steel and iron surfaces. The paint looks to be the second coat of gray. The tool rest cross-brace had to be brazed together due to a crack found during inspection (note black finish). The tail stock locking handle replaces the wing nut that was used (difficult to tighten with fingers inside that cavity). The screw center drive (from my Shopsmith 10ER) mounted to the headstock replaces the drive spur that came on it (note the gray metal part wrapped to power cord with white wrapper). There is only limited info on Childs & Company (http://www.lathes.co.uk/childs) other than it was originally from the U.K. and the Indiana branch must have been 'short-lived'.
