I'm finally getting around to photographing the old machines in my shop cellar. This one is for photographic proof of the exisence of the Gardner Machine Works. I bought this shaper many years ago for scrap value with the intent of rebuilding it. It has turned into one of those projects that never went anywhere. I pulled the spindles out and that's as far as it went. The bearings are frozen, the table is rusted, and the spindle threads are pretty shot. Altogether it looks like I'd have to sink a fair chunk of change into it before it ran again. Turns out it makes a pretty good work surface except for the two spindle holes, so here it sits.

The interesting part of this shaper's story is that it was likely cast in the foundry of the Baxter Whitney company, in Winchendon, MA, just up the road from Gardner. The table is exactly the same size as my Whitney 134, and the differences in the base have more to do with the fact that this is a belt driven machine rather than direct drive.
