This saw was advertised by a tool library here in Portland, Oregon. They have a habit of selling off tools they receive as donations but can't loan out for whatever reason. I was immediately interested, but at their asking price was not in any rush to put money down. I corresponded with several people who were somehow involved with this operation and arranged to meet the one in whose driveway the saw was stored under a tarp. When I got there the two fellows were trying to rewire it so they could plug it into the 110V outlet that was available. I didn't interfere but let them putter away most ineffectually for a while. I examined the saw and was troubled to find that the elevation screw appeared to have a spot with a large amount of backlash. I gingerly tried to see if I couldn't identify the problem. The wanna-be electrical whizzes meanwhile gave up after realizing they had no idea how to proceed and losing one of the tiny screws that holds the sheet metal lid to the motor housing in the gravel.
With no prospect for testing the motor and serious misgivings about the elevation gear I made a lowball offer which was accepted.

Back home I took it apart, checked for discussions of the elevation mechanism on the OWWM forum, and realized that as seen below the arm that transfers the elevation gear's revolution into linear motion was simply at 12 o'clock where I was feeling the backlash. The blade installed was also too large for the saw. The catalog lists this as a 9" saw, but try as I might I can't figure out how to fit more than an 8" blade below the table surface.
