Comments:
I bought this mortiser in Feb 2010 from my favourite connoisseur junque shop. No previous history is known. I took it completely apart and cleaned the castings by electrolysis. I found that it had been all black originally, and there was evidence of gold highlights. So I repainted it black and gold, and made new wooden springs and table.
It is another of the many brands of mortisers made from the patent by Ezra Gould of Newark, NJ. Smart & Shepherd was the name of the company from 1871 to 1879. In 1879 James Smart bought the company and continued making the mortiser until well into the 20th century.
