Only found in the 1934(H) and 1936(L) catalog--makes me wonder if it really is a Boice Crane made machine or one bought on the side and sold through their catalog. The 680 is similar to the 610 except that the 680 has a square table and 14" capacity but the 610 has a round table and only a 10" capacity. The #610 was offered at least 1933-1937ish. The saw frame shares many features with the #800 14" band saw and #820 12" band saw both of which were featured in that same time frame and is a logical extension of the style features of those saws.
The story: Joe the junkman (scrapmetal dealer) around my neighborhood gave me a call one night and said he had a machine for me to see. I have been trying to estalish a long-term relationship with him so that he sells me the good stuff when he gets it.... I figure, he gets into more people's basements and garages than I ever will. Seriously, he goes down the street in his red truck, going door to door and asking for scrap...
So he offered it to me and after a day or so he accepted the $15 I offered. I figure, there were no markings on the machine except a couple of casting numbers (900 in the arm, in the bottom of the table is 901). But otherwise, no manufacturer name or number or such. Ok, a little high maybe, but I am trying to estalish a long-term relationship with him so that he sells me the good stuff when he gets it....
After a quick post to THE SHOP it was suggested to me that this is a Boice Crane. Further research shows that it appears in only one catalog, the 1936 L-1 General Line Catalog on page 30 as the 680 Jig Saw.
The catalog states:
"These new Boice-Crane Jig Saws are examples of the greater values offered in Boice-Crane equipment. They are NOT toys. They are used for making wood products commercially, or in the home shop. Their size is no indication of capacity.
1. Sawing capacity: Both cut 1 1/2" material. No. 680 Jig Saw has 14" deep throat, saws to center of a 28" circle. Regularly equipped with univeral chucks that can be turned quickly to saw 'crosswise' to frame.
2. Smooth Running: We use the same tension spring for plunger return as on high priced jig saws. Both run quietly and with no vibration at high speed.
3. H
Saw works fine, air pump works fine, motor works fine. Just waiting for clean-up.
