Acquired this jointer to restore for my son. Previous owner and the PO before him apparently had owned the machine for more than fifty years. The chip breakers (aka gibs) were missing, and both POs said they had used the jointer without them. The set screws in the cutterhead contacted the knives directly--and near the bottom edge. After unsuccessful want ads on OWWM.org I solicited help from other OWWM members to determine the dimensions and exact shape of the chip breakers and had a set made by a local machinist. The jointer works fine, and I feel reasonably confident in passing it to my son now that the chip breakers are in place.
The first two photos show the jointer refurb'd and ready to go. The fence on this machine is "a bit over-engineered" in the words of a fellow OWWMer, but I think it's pretty neat. First, it's 4 1/2" high, great for edge jointing of wide boards. Although complicated the bevel and other adjustments are pretty easy to make and are reliable.
The chute enclosure, dust collection box, and belt guard are shop made and painted to match the machine. The paint is Rustoleum Industrial Dark Machinery Gray. As I mention whenever I use a switch of this type, it's not a "light" or "house" switch but a heavy duty motor rated switch. The motor is not original as easily can be seen. It's a 3/4 hp GE general purpose motor.
Photo 3 shows the jointer and original stand, the latter painted orange, before restoration. The table had some rough spots which polished out pretty well; nothing remaining that affects operation. The plastic "Atlas" label in script was fully intact.
