I bought this machine at a good price from two brothers who had been employed at the giant and then closing West Point Mills in Biddeford, Maine, in December, 2009. The machine had been in its maintenance shop I think since purchased new, perhaps around 1900. The machines in this shop were 550 volt electric motor powered, so this came with a nice 5 hp 550 motor, with fine unusual glass reservoir oilers. On a side note I passed up a Towsley 36" band saw from that shop and I regret this as that Towsely continues to come back in my thoughts, a very nice machine, run by 3 inch flat belt from its floor mounted 5 hp 550 motor. (Both these machines--and another, I think--had been on eBay without attracting the asked for opening bid, when I picked up the jointer from the huge mill I could've had the Towsley, too.
This appeared to be a solid operating machine, with a modern replacement 2 knife cylinder head (and about eight extra sets of knives shipped later to me). I have seen at least two other Baxter jointers in the same color, so I assume this was the factory paint.
Not having present room or need for an operating 16" jointer I dropped this off on the way home at the Chichester, NH shop of J. Weir, who had agreed to take this, as 1), he did not have a large jointer, 2), he did have a Baxter planer--older than the jointer, I believe--and 3), seemed to be able to care for a machine like this. I enjoyed meeting him.
Now, June 2010, I have recently purchased a Baxter planer, so there are two owners with New Hampshire Baxter jointer planer combinations.
