Purchased this band saw May, 2010 just north of Chicago. The owner stated it was the original paint and knew its history. His father had bought it from a customer who's dad was the original owner. Both families used the machine for about 35 to 40 years each. My "Wizard" is the same as the one posted by Terry Hennessy. It also came with a short blade. The Herberts Machinery Company specs length of blade to be 79". Since my blade was only 77 5/8", it required me to use a clamp to compress the upper wheel support when remounting the blade.
This saw had a few changes during the short time they were a source for Sears:
Band Saw changes from single door (with embossed "HEAVY DUTY") to two pieces allowing for a motor-mount.
Lower pulley side of main casting had complete embossed details of manufacture to none.
Upper wheel support changed to a hinged "clapper box" design.
Upper & lower blade guides improved to use two adjustable square blocks.
I assume the motor-mount hole and removal of Herberts identification from the main casting were done to accommodate the Craftsman Brand.
During disassembly and cleaning, I noticed blue paint under most parts except the main frame casting and the two wheels. Did Herberts use some excess inventory of Craftsman parts to make my machine?
Terry Hennessy's Wood Wizard comments does such a great job of noting details, I can only add to the 1/2" round stationary lower guide information. The round guide material is nonmetallic, 2 3/4" long and much lighter than lead.
