I found this machine on the outskirts of a rural town named Porterville, CA when I was a telephone installer. It was on a dirt road exposed to the weather with weeds growing up around it. Although it was about 30 years ago I believe the seller stated it had been in a sawmill in Springville, CA and originally powered by water. By the way, it was not officially for sale but money talks.
I replaced the original square 2-knife head with a 3-knife round cutter head machined down from a 24" planer. The belt guard is home-made. The fence is not the original one and had to be modified to fit the machine. The motor is a single phase 5 horse Westinghouse mounted on a unique motor plate that is hinged and raises and lowers with a hand wheel/threaded rod/tapered roller bearing arrangement for belt tensioning. My 15 KW generator has trouble starting this machine the way I originally had it geared so I had to go to a smaller pulley on the drive side which resulted in a slower than optimal cutter head speed. It still machines beautifully but I've been mulling around the idea of a system that would allow me to get the motor to full running speed and then clutch in the cutter head. The entire machine was sandblasted after the tables were surface ground and triple duct taped and then primed and painted.
