This was the first of two band saws that I purchased in a two day period. I had been looking for a wood/metal cutting band saw, but when I saw this one and heard the history of it, I knew I had to have it! It's very complete and even came with a "Getting The Most Out of You Band Saw" booklet, some original paperwork, and even the original retirement lamp. It even has cast iron wheels and the original fence and guides! How could I pass this one up?
I bought this saw from the Grandson of the original purchaser who had bought it new. Grandpa was in the Navy. When he died the saw was passed to his son who was also in the Navy. When he passed away it was passed on to the guy that I bought it from, who was also in the Navy. During the time that they all owned it and were transferred to various Navy bases, the saw went with them. It's been to Japan, Singapore, The Philippines, Alaska, (and others) and several bases here in the U.S.
After bringing her home I really looked at the serial number. 1-162! After checking with a few Delta experts, I believe that is the lowest serial number in the Delta registry. If you have a Delta machine with a lower serial number, I would LOVE to hear from you.
This saw is on a later model Craftsman stand with a non-Delta motor. If I keep it, these will be replaced.
I'm not yet sure what I will do with this saw. The day after I bought this one, I found the saw that I had been looking for... a pre-serial number wood and metal 14" Delta band saw.
Thanks for looking,
Guy
Update - I traded this BS to Mike Thomas for a WWII vintage wood/metal BS.
