This machine belongs to Lisa O'Neil, who gave us permission to use her pictures of this rare machine. McKechnie & Bertram was in business 1863 to 1885 so that's the range of possible dates. This long-bed style of planer fell out of popularity by the 1880s. In addition, the machine does not appear to have expansion gearing, it is constructed by bolting together flat castings, and there does not appear to be a chip breaker. All of this suggests that the machine is from well before 1880; 1872 is my guesstimate.
The planer is located in Prince Edward County, Ontario, and is currently for sale.
