After watching for a 1460 lathe for several months, one finally turned up. The gentleman I bought it from had inherited it from his father-in-law (Sumner Griffin) about 10 years ago. It has not been used since. The story was that Griffin purchased the lathe to do some work on a craftsman style house he purchased years ago in Knoxville, TN. Griffin worked at Tennessee Technical College. It is not known if the lathe was purchased new or used by Griffin. The lathe came to Tucker, Georgia after his death.
The presale inspection revealed that the headstock was in great shape with the original cover and a center. The tailstock was complete with nice ball knobs and center. The 12" rest and banjo were in good shape too. It even has the original 1/2 HP Delta Motor with the rod switch and rod still intact. The wood slabs in the table and shelf are still in very good shape as well. The motor and lathe run very smoothly and the bearings are quiet. The cap on the headstock didn't want to sit down tight. (After getting it home I found one of the alignment pins was bent slightly. I straightened it and it now sits straight and tight.)
The seller seemed excited that someone who appreciated the quality of the tool was buying it. His wife wanted to meet me to see who was getting her Dad's lathe.
I have been using the machine since purchase in July '09 and just noticed that I had never added it to the photo index. I plan to restore it now that Christmas is over and will add additional pictures then.
