Comments:
I traded one of my photographic landscape images for this saw. A bearing had spun, so a friend who is a mechanical engineer turned me a new armature out of high grade tool steel and gave me a pair of sealed bearings to go with it. The saw now runs very smooth and quiet. Jo Olds at Clausing said that based on the casting numbers, which are the only identifying marks on the saw, it is an Atlas S8E, made between 1940-43. I have been told, however, that it is probably an earlier model. [Admin: yes, it is in fact an S3-A, which shares many of the internals with the S8E] This makes sense, as the picture on the manual that Jo sent me doesn't match. The base casting is different, but there are enough matching similarities in many of the other parts to safely say that it is an Atlas saw.
