Monarch 10EE SN18061 was purchased by USN for Hudson Motor Car Company who had contract to build Oerlikon Cannon for Navy. Was one of two on the contract, 18061 and 18062. The lathe was placed in Govt storage and subsequently acquired by University of Wisconsin Chemistry Department. U Wis upgraded the drive to V belt drive on invoice 116-233. U Wis disposed of the lathe in 2022/23 and with the lathe went the original manual and set of collets as well as steady rest, those pieces lost in the machinery dealer shuffle. I purchased the 10EE from the machine dealer, hence am essentially the second owner of a little used 10EE, that appears to have only been painted once since new. U Wis advised that the lathe was not used as much as a former Army 10EE as it was fitted with a Sjogren-Hardinge 2J collet chuck. U Wis did add a nice DRO.
Basic information supplied by the fine folks at Monarch Lathes, who maintain all the records of their production. In fact Monarch is still making 10EE and other lathes for the US NAVY, about the only US Manufacturer left.
Now the question is where is SN 18062. |
