An eight-horse power engine and vertical boiler, in which strength, economy, and general efficiency are combined, was exhibited by this well known firm. The boiler, it is almost needless to say, is constructed on the principle for which Messrs. Cochran & Co. are famous, viz., with horizontal flue-tubes for economizing fuel, and which is known everywhere as the "Multi-tubular.” Annexed are two elevations of this boiler and engine. The combination presents several new features not to be found in ordinary engines of this class. Great strength and power are assured first by the arrangement of the boiler, and also by the fact that the cylinder, fly-wheel, &c. are neither upon the boiler nor fastened to it in any way beyond that requisite for the passage of steam, and the common bed-plate which ensures the great steadiness of the whole. The large wearing-surfaces are adjustable in all important parts, and both engine and boiler are throughout remarkably well adapted for all who need continuous hard work combined with economy and durability. A two-wheel portable engine of two-horse power was also exhibited by Messrs. Cochran & Co., made especially with a view to easy transit in mountainous districts. The boiler is of the multi-tubular class, above referred to, and the wheels are large and broad tired. In order to turn out work of the very best. kind this firm adopt the most approved machinery, as an instance of which we may mention a specimen flange-plate shown, which had been made by hydraulic appliances, and which for soundness and exactness was unsurpassed. |
