Image Description:
Engines are constructed from 10 to 35 horsepower (as shown in Fig. 176), and are fitted with Hartnell's patent automatic gear (as described in Fig. 223) for controlling the admission of steam into the cylinder. The cylinders are made of cold blast iron, and steam jacketed with a separate liner forced in. A stop valve is fixed to the cylinder with independent passage to the jacket; cylinder cocks, displacement lubricators, indicator bosses, &c, are provided. The crank shaft brasses are in four pieces, capable of horizontal and vertical adjustment. The guide blocks are adjustable. Numerous oil cups are provided, giving ample means of lubrication. The engine is so perfectly under the control of the automatic expansion apparatus that the whole load may be instantly removed with but slight variation in the speed. The cut-off extends to about 5/8 the stroke. The fly-wheels are turned to receive double belting wide enough to transmit the full power of the engine. The feed pumps are worked by a separate eccentric, and fitted with brass valves, seatings, and an air vessel. The engines are reversed by altering the position of the eccentric The engine beds are made right or left, and planed on the under surface. A pair of right and left-hand engines may be coupled, with the fly-wheel between them.
