Image Description:
Fig. 175 shows the pattern on which engines from 4 to 10 horse-power are constructed. The crankshaft is made very strong, and the form of bed adopted is such as to ensure the maximum strength and rigidity of construction. The outer end of the bed is bored to form the guide surfaces for the cross head, and turned to receive the cylinder, which is constructed with a separate liner. The outer casing is felted and lagged with mahogany, the piston and valve rods are steel, and the cross-head slippers adjustable; the stop valve is arranged with independent feed to the jacket, which also forms an effectual drain for the steam pipes. These engines are fitted with patent variable expansion eccentric, quick speed governors, equilibrium throttle valves, eccentric force pumps with gun metal valve boxes, and are supplied with a turned fly-wheel of ample size and width to receive a driving belt capable of giving off the full power of the engine. The bed-plate is planed on the underside, for ease of setting on the foundations.
