In the carrying out of engineering operations, the fitting up of machinery, and other kindred employments, a very keen want was felt for many years of a good portable forge. Many an hour has been wasted, and many a mile has had to be walked to the shop of the blacksmith, because there was no such useful thing at hand. Various attempts, more or less successful, have been made to meet the want; but nothing we have seen more completely and efficiently answers the purpose than the portable forge, recently sent out by Messrs. Thwaites & Carbutt, engineers, of Bradford. Neatness in design, compactness in size, and efficiency in working have rarely been more happily combined than in this forge. Made of wrought iron, it is very light and very strong. The blast is supplied by a small Root‘s blower of latest pattern, and which is driven by a pitch chain, direct from the rim of the handwheel. A great advantage is thereby secured by dispensing with all gearing and belting. The forge is also provided with a form of tuyere, the blast passing through a cast-iron grid. A current of air is made to circulate around the underside, and in that way the parts are kept cool. A remarkable feature of this forge is the small amount of power required to drive the blower in comparison with the strength of the blast produced. Its efficiency will be well understood and appreciated if it is stated that with a No. B forge a piece of two-inch square bar iron is heated to a melting heat in four minutes, the handwheel being turned at the rate of 30 revolutions per minute. By simply opening a lid at the lower part of the tuyere any ashes that may have lodged there can be cleared away. It has only to be stated that this portable forge is all that could be desired. |
