Image Description:
A New Steam Tractor—An Excellent Production from the Smithfield Works, Leeds.

One of the most interesting exhibits at the Derby Show was the new tractor shown by Messrs. Thomas Green and Son, Ltd. This can be had with either simple or compound engine. The former has a single cylinder with a bore of 6½ in. and a stroke of 10 in., while in the case of the compound the dimensions of the high and low-pressure cylinders are 4½ in. and 8 in. diameter respectively by 10 in. stroke.

The engine is steam jacketed by being surmounted with the dome, so that the cylinders are completely surrounded by steam at the full boiler pressure. The boiler plates are hydraulically flanged and riveted, and the boiler, which is well stayed throughout, is tested to 300 lbs. per square inch, and works at 180 lbs. The barrel is 2 ft. in diameter, the shell plates being 3/8 in. and 7/16 in. thick, while the tube plates are 17/32 in. full thick. The heating surface is 60 sq. ft. and the grate area 3¼ sq. ft., while the twenty-nine boiler tubes are 1 ¾ in diameter and 3ft. 6½ in. long. The firebox is stayed all round with 7/8 in. Yorkshire iron stays spaced at a pitch of about 4in. The fittings include a Ramsbotham safety valve with gunmetal valve seats.

The crankshaft is of best mild hammered steel, and is carried in steel brackets fitted with gunmetal bushes. These are fitted into recesses formed in the fire box side plates. The cast steel gearing provides for road speeds of three and six miles an hour, the change being effected through a safety clutch designed so that both gears cannot be put in at the same time.

The driving wheels are 4ft. 6in. in diameter and 10 in. wide, and are constructed of strong T-steel rings with wrought-iron formed spokes and cast-iron bosses. The front wheels are 3 ft. 4 in. in diameter. The engine is carried at the front on a laminated spring and at the back on two conical involute spiral springs. A winding drum is fitted on the hind axle together with thirty yards of wire rope, and a special water lifter on the tank is provided with twenty feet of suction hose.

The feed pump is mounted inside the tender in a convenient position for the driver, and an injector is also fitted. The engine is sent out with a very complete set of fittings and tools.

The front part of the tractor is so arranged that it can be taken off with the smoke box and replaced by a front with Roller wheels.
