Photo #7-The new, presidential Gerald R. Ford Museum and the old West Side Iron Works/original Monarch Road Machinery building, circa 1981, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 116 year-old schoolhouse/machine shop suffered fire damage in 1979 and 1981 and was razed in 1982. The family donated the property to the museum grounds. Near the President’s grave, one can walk the fence to a plaque at the original site of Monarch and the West Side Iron Works. The old shop is gone, but its band saws and fire escapes continue to serve.
