This engine is a German make that in Europe has attained considerable success and celebrity from being the one that “broke the Otto patent,” that it was claimed gave a monopoly of the well-known “ Otto cycle " of action. Prior to that a separate compression cylinder was used, but since then the regular single cylinder, Otto form, was adopted.
As will be seen from the cut, it is of the vertical compact type, using gear driven flame ignition and a cam action to operate "mushroom" or poppet valves. Two methods of governing are employed. When constancy of speed is aimed at, explosions are not omitted, but their power is governed by a varying quantity of a constant explosive mixture. When highest economy is sought, the full charge explosions are maintained, lessened in number as required. The governor further has a screw adjustment for variable speed. The efficiency claimed is from 15 to 35 feet per hour, according to size.
In the American market the engine was handled by the Körting Gas Engine Co., Limited, of New York, Geo. W. Sillcox, manager, and introduced about 1886-87. Possibly 100, ranging from ½ to 15 H. P., were put out in the East. Since then, however, the engine entirely lapsed. The only reason I can ascertain is an unconfirmed report that “the German make (imported) engines were very satisfactory, but the American ones were poorly made and gave trouble." |
