Duplex Tool and Disc Grinders
Thousands of farmers are equipped with a gas engine or other forms of power. Many have a line shaft with pulleys from which various kinds of machines may be driven by belts. These machines are selected to suit the requirements of the owner and vary with the locality and the method of handling his farm.
But there is one little belt-driven machine that is universal in its usefulness, and is a necessity on farms and ranches all over the world. The belt-driven emery-wheel grinder manufactured by the Duplex Mill and Manufacturing Company, of Springfield, Ohio, is doubtless the most serviceable device that has ever been offered to the trade. It has only to be shown in order to sell it to any one who has a power plant on his place. It will pay for itself in a few weeks, as all kinds of farm tools can be sharpened on it. One grinding of the discs on a disc harrow or drill will save over one-half of its cost; and then axes, knives, plowshares and cultivator shovels can be put in shape at home with only a few minutes' loss in a busy time.
The emery-wheel grinder is made in two styles; the same frame or stand is, however, used in both types. As usually built, the device consists of a stand mandrel with two babbitted boxes at the top of the frame to carry the shaft. One end of the shaft is shouldered and threaded, so that by the use of flanges and nuts the emery wheel is securely fastened to the shaft. To the other end of the shaft is keyed the pulley by which to operate the grinder. A bracket is cast upon the stand that carries the support for the tool rest. This support and the tool rest are adjustable to the grinding wheel, as it becomes reduced by use. To the tool rest is attached a center rod and clamp used in grinding discs. This center rod is adjustable, so that discs of various diameter can be ground evenly and at exactly the desired angle.
The other type of this device is similar to the one above described, except that the pulley is placed on the shaft in the center of the shaft, and a grinding wheel is furnished attached to each end of the shaft, one each, coarse and fine wheel, being furnished on the same frame. This enables the operator to do all rough work on the coarse wheel and to finish his work on the fine wheel.
These emery-wheel grinders are sold at prices that are within the reach of all, and afford the dealer a satisfactory profit. |
