In portable engines we failed to find any novelty worth describing or illustrating, save the method of construction adopted by Messrs. Ruston, Proctor and Co., and illustrated by the accompanying engraving. Wrought iron riveted saddle-plates for the crank-shaft bearings have been used for many years by Messrs. Garrett and other firms. Messrs. Ruston, Proctor and Co., have extended the system to the attachment of the cylinders, which can thus be made flat-footed. The whole work of erection is simplified and the chance of leakage and corrosion taking place between the cylinder saddle and the boiler is, of course, quite obviated. The engraving explains itself.
