Double-headed lathes are useful for general purposes, because they fulfil the function of a shaft-turning lathe, or for the purpose of cutting exceptionally long screws, while they are suitable for ordinary work, which can be done in duplicate by one man easily. The change from the latter to the former is easily made by removing the centre head and one poppet, leaving both saddles and rests available for duplex tools. Fig. 284 illustrates a lathe of this type by the Britannia Co., of Colchester. It is of 10-in. centres, and the bed can be made of any length up to forty feet. |
