Fig. 33 illustrates a good type of English lathe of medium dimensions, being one of 12-in. centres. It is one of a series by Greenwood & Batley, of Leeds, which ranges from 6-in. to 12-in. centres. The bridge piece beds right down on the bottom of the gap instead of on shoulders on the shears, or on a central boss, an arrangement, which tends to stability. The lathe is completely equipped for self-acting sliding, and surfacing by back-shaft, and for screw-cutting by lead-screw. The back-shaft is driven by belt. The broad wearing surfaces of the slide-rest and its substantial character may be noted. |
