The machine here shown was made at the works of Messrs. Knight & Co., Sutter Creek, Amador County, Cal., and has, with one exception, the longest range, horizontal and vertical, of any radial machine on this Coast. It will drill eight feet from the column, and receive ten feet under the arm.
The driving power is connected to the shaft A at the top, and by spur wheels to the shaft in front of the column, thence through the bevel wheels and cone pulleys on the left in the usual manner. Other details of the machine will be plain from the drawing. We may, however, mention that the table is arranged with a sector and gearing for adjustment, not shown in the drawing.
The larger machine, mentioned above, is one imported from England, by the Union Iron Works several years ago, intended for boring as well as drilling, and that far we consider a mistake, for all holes that can be managed on the horizontal machines, with which the works are well equipped. In our experience a radial drilling machine has only one function in boring ; that is, to turn the bar.
Mr. Knight's machine, which is intended for use in his own works at Sutter Creek, is arranged for drilling only, and its proportions are ample for that purpose, or for "driving" a boring bar. The work there is extremely varied, and much of it that cannot be managed under common drilling machines. |
