This City has been the birth place of a great many improvements in various manufactures and engineering work, but in nearly or quite all cases, such improvements have been a result of local adaptation and in some of a boldness of design, characteristic of practice here. At last, however, there seems to have been developed an industry, or manufacture that will, no doubt, become national if not even wider. We allude to what are called vapor engines, but which are veritable gas engines in all their essential elements, capable of operating with any kind of inflammable fluid that will explode when mingled with air in proper proportion. These engines are made under various modifications adapted to different purposes.
The engraving above shows a horizontal engine of four horsepower, by the Regan Vapor Engine Company, of this City. Engines of the same type, also vertical ones, are made from one to ten horse power, and when required the horizontal ones are connected directly to pumps mounted on the same frames. |
