The first information I obtained in regard to this form is from the description in Cassier’s Magazine for May, '93. I am later advised that the engine, made by the Backus Water iM0to"r Co., of Newark, N. J., is of both horizontal and vertical form, Otto cycle type, and that it will be made in sizes from ½ to 100 H. P. It uses the tube ignition, poppet valves, a cog-gear for opening exhaust, and a centrifugal governor within the belt pulley that operates by opening or closing, more or less, the gas valve, omitting gas as required. A further device enables the changing of the speed of the engine while in motion. This engine is comparatively a new one on the market, having been introduced in 1890-92. Some 100 are now in use. |
