THE MANVILLE AUTOMATIC WIRE FORMING MACHINE
This form of machine was originally designed by the late E. J. Manville, in 1855, for making suspender and trouser-buckle frames. They did not come into general use until about 1870, when the demand for wire articles in various forms made a corresponding demand for machinery to produce them. At this time Mr. Manville placed on the market an improved and heavier machine. Since Mr. Manville's death, this machine has been manufactured by his sons. In October, 1897, the Manville Brothers Company was incorporated, the stock of which is owned exclusively by Robert C. Manville, William W. Manville and George H. Manville. In designing and placing on the market a machine as shown by the cut, the Manville Brothers Company had in view and are building a strictly up-to-date, first-class machine, embodying all the improvements that twenty years' experience has brought about. The material used in their construction is the best. The shafts are steel, and extra large. The gears are cut from the solid metal. Working parts of the cams and rolls are tool steel, and hardened. All sliding surfaces are carefully scraped to a fit. These machines are made in several sizes, and have a capacity of handling wire, approximately, from .010 to .375, and from 1 inch to 14 inches in length. This machine has four slides, to which tools are attached, movable towards and from a central suspended form, and are actuated by cams on the shafts, the form and tools being the shape of the article required. There are some classes of work that do not require a four-slide machine. To supply the demand they are building machines with one, two or three slides, as the nature of the article to be produced demands. Once the wire is started into one of these machines it is entirely automatic, as it straightens, cuts off, forms and ejects the finished piece. The cut illustrates a few wires that have been formed on these machines. It will be noticed that they are shaped in one plane An article with a bend or offset in another direction would require a special attachment, which in many cases would be applied. The members of the Manville Brothers Company have had twenty years' experience in building machinery for working wire, metal and wood, and the company make a specialty of machinery for producing eyelets, safety and jewelry pins, hooks and eyes, and special articles. They also manufacture presses, dies and tools. |
