Image Description:
The movable gap-lathes of the Pratt & Whitney Co. are illustrated in Fig. 26. The sliding bed, or, as the Americans term it, the saddle, is moved along, with rack and pinion, operated by a lever, and is clamped in any position by means of bolts. The carriage is unequally ended, like the English ones. It is operated through belt cones driving a shaft, back through spur gears at the right-hand end to the splined feed-rod in front. With the exception of the sliding bed and its arrangements, the lathes are similar to other engine lathes of the same centres.
