Image Description:
THE FRONTIER IRON WORKS — The illustrations show the plant and two of the products of the Frontier Iron Works, Buffalo, N. Y. The birds-eye view is a very true picture of the new plant, located on the corner of Letchworth and Grant streets. The general office is situated to the right of the gate entrance and the machine shop, a two-story building with basement, is seen at the left. It is here that Modern drill presses and Royal power saws are manufactured. This building is 150x50 feet in size and is equipped with the most modern equipment for the rapid production of these tools. This company's aim has been to offer only the latest improved tools in this line and from the large growing trade, it appears that these tools are in demand in every quarter of the world. The whole plant is of brick and steel construction with railroad sidings at convenient points for shipping and receiving.
In the drill shown it will be noted that it is equipped with a tilting table operated by a worm and screw, allowing the table to be tilted to 90 degrees on either side of the knee, a very great time saver in drilling many classes of work. Another feature is the square spindle drive through the crown gear, which eliminates friction to a great extent. Besides the special features, these machines are extra heavy in construction and are designed to stand up under high-speed tools. The company manufactures a line of power saws in five sizes, ranging in capacity from 4x4Vz inches to 10x15 inches. The cut shows the No. 3 machine, a heavy well made tool having a capacity of 8x8 inches. The vise swivels for cutting angles up to 45 degrees. This feature is included in all sizes except No. 1 which has a solid vise. These tools are equipped with a quick starting clutch, automatic stop and gravity feed. They have a very valuable feature not on other machines, namely, the saw can be raised to a vertical position while placing large work in the vise. Special attention is drawn to the workmanship on these tools. All surfaces and hearings are carefully machined, injuring accuracy and long service. In addition to the tools shown the company manufactures a 20-in. drill and is also building a new sensitive drill.
The foundry shown in the rear is a large well lighted building with all modern equipment including electric cranes and other conveniences for handling material. Power is supplied by 115 h. p. of electric motors divided in different sizes and departments. The company makes a specialty of fine castings for automobile, marine and aeroplane motors. Prompt shipments are a feature with this company and circulars and full details regarding any of its products may be obtained upon request.
