Image Description:
THE GEISER MANUFACTURING CO. — It is stated that these makers “produce the best-designed, best-constructed and best-adapted line of machinery of its kind in this or any other country.” The engine frame is of the Corliss pattern, with a disc-crank. The main axle is placed behind the fire-box beneath the fire-hole, the right position for preventing any rearing propensity. The driving wheels are constructed of steel and malleable iron, the spokes are steel tubes; they are provided with wedges at one end, and can therefore be tighten when required. All spur-wheels are used for the compensating gear, and by use of steel springs is made elastic. This not only ensures the gearing against sudden jars, but it also causes an equal bearing on all the pinions. An illustration, Fig. 232, shows the piston-valve. By the use of this valve, the power of the engine is increased, better control of the engine is secured and the engine is more easily reversed. The valve and its seat are made of hard chilled metal, ground truly; there is therefore practically no wear; the valve and parts are interchangeable A brick arch is used in the fire-box of the boiler for burning straw; the horn-plates of the boiler are carried backward for supporting the main axle carriages. The platform of the engine is short, which makes it convenient to fire the boiler from the ground when thrashing.
