GAAR SCOTT AND CO. — Fig. 231 represents a single-cylinder traction engine. The driving-wheels are cast solid, or practically in one piece; the segment side of the wheel shows the large diameter of the segment, and its strong attachment to the lugs cast with the tire. The face of the wheel as well as the cross strips are chilled; the spokes are cast in two rows from the nave to the tire of the wheels. A Corliss type of frame is adopted by the firm, with the usual counterbalanced disc. The steam pipe is led from the dome to the cylinder in the steam space of the boiler, an advantage over many of the exposed steam pipes in vogue. It will be seen that the driving-wheels are stationed in the centre of the fire-box shell, and to prevent the engine from retiring, a large water-tank is fixed beyond the smoke-box, as shown. The bed-plate or frame, the cylinder, guides, and pillow-blocks are all cast in one piece; they are bored at one operation; the valve-rod gland is bored at the same time, so that these parts are always in perfect alignment. Spiral rolls are used for the steering chains, and the chains are always fairly tight, the slack is taken up by the roller. A Pickering governor is mounted on the throttle-valve box. Gaar Scott make compound traction engines with tandem cylinders; the high-pressure cylinder and the low-pressure cylinders are directly and strongly attached to each other, without any open space between them; a metallic packing-ring ia employed between the cylinders for the piston-rod. With many thrashermen, however, it is still an open question whether there is enough advantage gained in compound engines over simple engines to compensate for the extra cost of the former. It is understood this firm make their own boilers for their traction engines; they use two types: for straw burning, they recommend a return flue boiler with the chimney at the fire-box end.
