Image Description:
THE FRICK COMPANY — "The 'Eclipse' traction engine is the standard engine of to-day," and, as the makers state, "represents the most advanced practice in this special department in steam engineering." It is a general-purpose engine, intended for driving a thrashing machine or for road locomotive work. In this road engine the axle is placed in the front of the fire-box. The independent system of mounting the machinery at the fire-box end of the boiler is clearly shown in the illustration, Fig. 229. The boiler is relieved of all the working strains of the machinery, and instead of carrying the engine it is mounted on a frame, as shown. The driving-wheel and spring-drive for the compensating bevel-wheel is shown by Fig. 228. It will be seen that flat iron spokes are used riveted to the tire; the cross-strips are made of cast-steel and riveted on. A very good drawing is given, Fig. 230, of the Frick engine in plan. The over-neck disc-crank is discarded with advantage for the counterbalanced dip-crank; the counterbalance weights are placed in the most efficient position; the crank-shaft bearings are of great length. A single eccentric reversing-gear is shown. The friction disengaging clutch is an important feature on all American traction engines, and is never used in England; the want of it is not experienced in practice. The front and hind parts of the engine are carried on springs, not very clearly shown in the illustrations. A long-stroke feed-pump delivers the water into a heater, through which the exhaust steam passes to the smoke-box. There is no cast-iron used in the construction of the boiler, the plates are all of steel. The boiler is made with a circulating water-bottom and water-front.
