Image Description:
THE CASE THRESHING MACHINE CO. — The makers assert "their traction engine has far outstripped its rivals in the race for public favor." In the present engine the hind axle is placed beneath the fire-hole, mounted on cast-iron brackets bolted to the front of the fire-box shell; the countershaft is arranged directly over it as in English practice. It will be noticed that horn-plates are provided for carrying the crank-shaft plummer blocks; this again is following English design. Owing to the axle being placed in this position, the engine can be mounted on the boiler with the crankshaft near the driver, without any fear of the engine rearing. Fig. 226 represents a Case traction engine The driving-wheels have square-headed steel spokes, held in position by lock-nuts to prevent their working loose in the hub. At the tire-ends the spokes are held by nuts, not cast in as is usual; the cross strips are of malleable iron riveted on the tires. A section of the boiler is given by Fig. 227, from which it will be seen it has a brick arch in the fire-box. Experience has taught the makers that water-legs and baffle-plates are poor substitutes compared with the brick arch, which, becoming incandescent, materially aids the combustion of straw, the only fuel available. Messrs. Case are compounding their traction engines like the rest of the American makers; they have adopted the tandem arrangement, using a single-balanced slide-valve for the distribution of steam to both the high and low pressure cylinders. The working pressure for the simple and compound traction engines is 130 lbs. per square inch.
