THE ADVANCE THRESHER COMPANY — The makers affirm that Fig. 224 "is the most beautiful engine manufactured, graceful in design and simple in construction." Respecting the beauty of design, they say: "This important feature is seen in every line and curve, while simplicity marks it as a whole. Compare it with any make of engine in the market, and your first and last opinion will be that in beauty and simplicity of design, the Advance engine is beyond each and every one." Our readers will form their own opinion respecting the engine and the claims made for it. The engine frame is bolted to the boiler at the crank and cylinder end; the overneck crank-disc is used. Steam is taken from a dome placed in the centre of the boiler barrel. Most of the weight of the engine is placed forward, and on the front wheels; unless this were done, the engine would rear, owing to the driving-axle being fixed in the centre of the fire-box, as shown. The driving-wheels have cast-iron naves, a long bearing for the axle, and steel spokes, with cast-iron tires with cross strips cast on. The makers recommend their compound traction engine, which they say effects a saving of 28 per cent, in fuel and water over the simple engine. An illustration is given, Fig. 225, of the tandem cylinder, which explains itself. The simple engines have a working pressure of 120 lbs. per square inch, and the compound engines 150 lbs. per square inch. In the saving recorded above, the boiler of the compound engine was lagged during the trial, while the simple engine had a naked boiler, so that a good proportion of the gain is due to the clothing of the compound boiler. The Advance spring mounting arrangement is illustrated in Chapter VII. Compared with some of the American makers, the Advance Company gives few particulars of their traction engines. Two tables of dimensions are appended on the following pages. |
