THE WANTAGE ENGINEERING CO. — Fig. 221 represents an 8 horse-power general-purpose traction engine made by the Wantage firm. It is of the three-shaft type, with the fast and slow-speed pinions on the end of the crank-shaft outside the bearing; the slow-speed pinion slides inside the fast-speed or large pinion in the usual manner in three-shaft traction engines. The cross-head is of cast-iron, bored to fit the bored guide, which is supported by a bracket; this forms the governor stand,1 and carries the reversing lay shaft. A cross-arm governor is adopted, which acts on an equilibrium throttle-valve. The winding-drum is on the gearing side of the engine ; it carries fifty yards of 1½-in. circumference steel-wire rope. It will be seen that the steering-gear is placed on the right-hand side (the gearing side), the reversing lever and the pump occupying the left-hand side. Another illustration, Fig. 222, shows a single-cylinder road locomotive with outside gearing as the engine just described. A fore tank is fitted with the steerage bolted to the front. Side-plates for screening the working parts and a plated flywheel for a similar purpose is also shown. |
